Q. How many different types of JDBC drivers are present? Discuss them.
Ans. Type 1: JDBC-ODBC Bridge plus ODBC Driver: The first type of JDBC driver is the JDBC-ODBC Bridge. It is a driver that provides JDBC access to databases throughODBC drivers. The ODBC driver must be configured on the client for the bridge to work. This driver type is commonly used for prototyping or when there is no JDBC driveravailable for a particular DBMS.
Type 2: Native-API partly-Java Driver: The Native to API driver converts JDBC commands to DBMS-specific native calls. This is much like the restriction of Type 1 drivers. The client must have some binary code loaded on its machine. These drivers do have an advantage over Type 1 drivers because they interface directly with the database.
Type 3: JDBC-Net Pure Java Driver: The JDBC-Net drivers are a three-tier solution. This type of driver translates JDBC calls into a databaseindependent network protocolthat is sent to a middleware server. This server then translates this DBMSindependent protocol into a DBMS-specific protocol, which is sent to a particular database. Theresults are then routed back through the middleware server and sent back to the client. This type of solution makes it possible to implement a pure Java client. It also makesit possible to swap databases without affecting the client.
Type 4: Native-Protocol Pur Java Driver: These are pure Java drivers that communicate directly with the vendor's database. They do this by converting JDBC commandsdirectly into the database engine's native protocol. This driver has no additional translation or middleware layer, which improves performance tremendously.

Q. Name four Container classes?
Ans. Dialog, FileDialog, Panel, Applet.

Q. What is Singleton class?
Ans. Singleton class is a class whose only one object can be created at a time. - To achieve this one method is that we make its constructor private and provide a static method that returns its instance.
When a Singleton class is garbage - collected and then reloaded, a new Singleton instance is created.

Q. What is synchronization and why is it important?
Ans. With respect to multithreading, synchronization is the capability to control the access of multiple threads to shared resources. Without synchronization, it is possible for one thread to modify a shared object while another thread is in the process of using or updating that object's value. This often causes dirty data and leads to significant errors.

Q. Are constructors inherited?Can a subclass call the parent's class constructor?When?
Ans. You cannot inherit a constructor. That is, you cannot create a instance of a subclass using a constructor of one of it's superclasses. One of the main reasons is because youprobably don't want to overide the superclasses constructor, which would be possible if they were inherited. By giving the developer the ability to override a superclassesconstructor you would erode the encapsulation abilities of the language.

Q. What are wrapped classes?
Ans. Wrapped classes are classes that allow primitive types to be accessed as objects.

Q. What is the disadvantage of threads?
Ans. The Main disadvantage of threads is : Threads is operating system dependent.

Q. How to make application thread-safe ?
Ans. Using synchronized keyword you can make thread safe application and you can also use wait(), notify(), notifyall(). All these methods are of Object class.
Q. Why Java is case sensitive?
Ans. Java is multi platform-> Platform Independent Language, so its used widely in very big softwares or games where multiple variables needed. To Differentiate among that huge no of variables,,Java is Case Sensitive.

Q. What is JVM?
Ans. Java Virtual Machine is the one which change the source code in to the code that is executable through the system so that this helps in making the Java Platform independent as this coude is accessible in any of the operating system

Important Testing Interview Questions

Q. Which is the best way to solve defects - requirements, plan, design, code / testing phase?
Ans. In any phase, the sooner we see a defect, the less is the cost spent on rectifying the defect. It becomes a costlier affair in later stages. The best phase is Requirements phase. When the defect is found in later phases, it costs more for its correction.

Q. Cost of solving a bug from requirements phase to testing phase - increases slowly, decreases, increases steeply or remains constant?
Ans. In any Life Cycle, defects in the later stages increases Cost because the amount of work needed to do, the resources needed to complete the additional task, the time spent on it, meetings and of course amount. let me tell you an example, assume if 3 different critical issues with respect to Design/functionality of the application are found in these 3 different stages lets say 1st critical defect found in design, 2nd and 3rd critical defects found Coding Phase and Testing phase.
So to fix the 1 defect, in design phase it is obvious that by this time not all the documents are finalized or else i can say coding stage is just started, so BA or High level management can fix it with some effort by doing changes according to the need, as they have lots of time for the release of first build, but for the issues found in coding and testing phase, changes has to be done in Requirement documents, Design documents, specifications, Application Design, Code written to develop application etc., by the respective members and also all the related and effected documents with respect to Testing like Test plan, Test objectives, traceability matrix, test cases, raising or closing the bugs that are linked with the defect etc., needed to be change by test team, and more over assume the situation if such kind of defects were found when major release is nearby (in a week's) when build release dates gap is decreasing drastically build after build due to the issues.

Q. What is the purpose of software testing's - Bug removal, System's functionality working, quality or all?
Ans. The main purpose of Software testing, I think is not to remove the bug but to find the bug. Also ensuring the application works correctly as per the requirements and thereby increasing the quality of the product and increasing the confidence in the product.

Q. Define Quality - bug free, Functionality working or both?
Ans. Quality: The degree to which a product performs as advertised without flaws and without unnecessary complications Also for finding bugs and making sure they (bugs)get fixed and stay fixed.

Q. How do we measure the given project is risk based project?
Ans. Risk can be found based on many factors some of the common factors are1. Amount of testing work to be done X time remaining2. No.of. important open bugs3. Areas untested X time remaining (change in requirements/scope of AUT/functionality comes under this category)4. Anticipation of high priority/severity bugs exisiting in system (concluded by tester based on historical data)5.Anticipated regression bugs.

Q. What are upgrade and new versions of project? what is the difference between them?
Ans. A version is a number assigned to a software package having a particular set of functionalities. The authors of the software or application keep on removing previous bugs & adding new features to the applications and the newer application is marked with a newer number called version. If there is a small change the version number is increased by a decimal point. If there is a larger change in the application the version number is incremented by the whole number. Most of the applications have the feature to check if the higher version of that application is available on the internet. If the higher version of application is available on the internet we can uninstall the lower version & install the higher version of the application. At times we need not uninstall the lower version of the application and some patch or driver is available installing which the application acquires the functionality of higher version & the application shows the version number of the higher version application. So a complete version of application is a complete software package which can be installed independently. An upgrade is not a complete software package which can work on its own.

Datawarehousing Interview Questions 2

Q.What is Surrgate key?
Ans.Surrogate key is a substitution for the natural primary key.
It is just a unique identifier or number for each row that can be used for the primary key to the table. The only requirement for a surrogate primary key is that it is unique for each row in the table.Data warehouses typically use a surrogate, (also known as artificial or identity key), key for the dimension tables primary keys. They can use Infa sequence generator, or Oracle sequence, or SQL Server Identity values for the surrogate key.It is useful because the natural primary key (i.e. Customer Number in Customer table) can change and this makes updates more difficult. Some tables have columns such as AIRPORT_NAME or CITY_NAME which are stated as the primary keys (according to the business users) but ,not only can these change, indexing on a numerical value is probably better and you could consider creating a surrogate key called, say, AIRPORT_ID. This would be internal to the system and as far as the client is concerned you may display only the AIRPORT_NAME.
Q.What are the steps to build Data Warehouse?
Ans. The steps to build Datawarehouse are
Gathering bussiness requiremnts
Identifying Sources
Identifying Facts
Defining Dimensions
Define Attribues
Redefine Dimensions & Attributes
Organise Attribute Hierarchy & Define Relationship
Assign Unique Identifiers
Additional convetions:Cardinality/Adding ratios
Q.What is incremental loading, batch processing, cross reference table, aggregate fact table?
Ans.Incremental loading means loading the ongoing changes in the OLTP.Aggregate table contains the [measure] values ,aggregated /grouped/summed up to some level of hierarchy.
Batch Processing means executing more than one session in single run at the same time. We can execute these session in 2 ways :
linear: exececuting one after another.
parallel: executing more than one session at at time.
Q.What is Hybrid slowly changing dimension?
Ans. Hybrid SCDs are combination of both SCD 1 and SCD 2.It may happen that in a table, some columns are important and we need to track changes for them i.e capture the historical data for them whereas in some columns even if the data changes, we don't care. For such tables we implement Hybrid SCDs, where in some columns are Type 1 and some are Type 2.
Q.What is the main difference between Inmon and Kimball philosophies of data warehousing?
Ans. Both differed in the concept of building teh datawarehosue..According to Kimball ...Kimball views data warehousing as a constituency of data marts. Data marts are focused on delivering business objectives for departments in the organization. And the data warehouse is a conformed dimension of the data marts. Hence a unified view of the enterprise can be obtain from the dimension modeling on a local departmental level.Inmon beliefs in creating a data warehouse on a subject-by-subject area basis. Hence the development of the data warehouse can start with data from the online store. Other subject areas can be added to the data warehouse as their needs arise. Point-of-sale (POS) data can be added later if management decides it is necessary.
Inmon---First Datawarehouse--Later----Datamarts
Kimball--First DataMarts--Combined way ---Datawarehouse.

Data Warehousing Interview Questions and Answers

Q1.What is a CUBE in Data Warehousing concept?
Ans.Cubes are logical representation of multidimensional data. The edge of the cube contains dimension members and the body of the cube contains data values.
Q2.What is the Datatype of Surrgate key?
Ans.Datatype of the surrgate key is either integer or numeric or number.
Q3.What is Data Warehousing Hierarchy?Hierarchies Hierarchies are logical structures that use ordered levels as a means of organizing data. A hierarchy can be used to define data aggregation. For example, in a time dimension, a hierarchy might aggregate data from the month level to the quarter level to the year level. A hierarchy can also be used to define a navigational drill path and to establish a family structure.Within a hierarchy, each level is logically connected to the levels above and below it. Data values at lower levels aggregate into the data values at higher levels. A dimension can be composed of more than one hierarchy. For example, in the product dimension, there might be two hierarchies--one for product categories and one for product suppliers.Dimension hierarchies also group levels from general to granular. Query tools use hierarchies to enable you to drill down into your data to view different levels of granularity. This is one of the key benefits of a data warehouse. When designing hierarchies, you must consider the relationships in business structures. For example, a divisional multilevel sales organization.Hierarchies impose a family structure on dimension values. For a particular level value, a value at the next higher level is its parent, and values at the next lower level are its children. These familial relationships enable analysts to access data quickly.LevelsA level represents a position in a hierarchy. For example, a time dimension might have a hierarchy that represents data at the month, quarter, and year levels. Levels range from general to specific, with the root level as the highest or most general level. The levels in a dimension are organized into one or more hierarchies.Level RelationshipsLevel relationships specify top-to-bottom ordering of levels from most general (the root) to most specific information. They define the parent-child relationship between the levels in a hierarchy.Hierarchies are also essential components in enabling more complex rewrites. For example, the database can aggregate an existing sales revenue on a quarterly base to a yearly aggregation when the dimensional dependencies between quarter and year are known.
Q4.What is Bus Schema?
Ans.BUS Schema is composed of a master suite of confirmed dimension and standardized definition if facts.
In a BUS schema we would eventually have conformed dimensions and facts defined to be shared across all enterprise data marts. This way all Data Marts can use the conformed dimensions and facts without having them locally. This is the first step towards building an enterprise Data Warehouse from Kimball's perspective. For (e.g) we may have different data marts for Sales, Inventory and Marketing and we need common entities like Customer, Product etc to be seen across these data marts and hence would be ideal to have these as Conformed objects. The challenge here is that some times each line of business may have different definitions for these conformed objects and hence choosing conformed objects have to be designed with some extra care.
Q5.What is fact, dimension and measure?
Ans.Fact is key performance indicator to analyze the business.Dimension is used to analyze the fact.Without dimension there is no meaning for fact.
Fact:It is a measure,EX:Sales,Accounts etc.Dimension:It deals with the details of the data.EX:Geography,Time etc.Measure:I deals with the quantity of the data.
Fact is the Key performance Indicator which handles the Numerical Value,Dimension concerned about the subjective areas of the data,Measure is the quantity we create to process
Q6.What is Dimensional Modelling?
Ans. Fact is the Key performance Indicator which handles the Numerical Value,Dimension concerned about the subjective areas of the data,Measure is the quantity we create to process
Q7.what is the difference between view and materialised view?
Ans. View - store the SQL statement in the database and let you use it as a table. Everytime you access the view, the SQL statement executes. Materialized view - stores the results of the SQL in table form in the database. SQL statement only executes once and after that everytime you run the query, the stored result set is used. Pros include quick query results.
Q8.What is the difference between star and snowflake schemas?
Ans. Star schemaA single fact table with N number of DimensionSnowflake schemaAny dimensions with extended dimensions are know as snowflake schema
Star schema is a logical structure that can be arranged with fact and dimension tables in a star formation. It looks like a star with fact table at the core of the star and the dimension tables along the spikes of the star. The dimension model is hence called a star schema
SNOWFLAKING is a method of normalizing the dimension tables in a star schema

10 home remedies to avoid swine flu

Here are some easy steps you can take to tackle a flu virus of any kind, including swine flu. It is not necessary to follow all the steps at once. You can pick and choose a combination of remedies that suit you best. However, if you are already suffering from flu, these measures can help only up to an extent. And, if you have been infected by H1N1, visiting a hospital and staying in solitary confinement is a must.
1. Have five duly washed leaves of Tulsi (known as Basil in English; medicinal name Ocimum sanctum) everyday in the morning. Tulsi has a large number of therapeutic properties. It keeps throat and lungs clear and helps in infections by way of strengthening your immunity.
2. Giloi (medicinal name Tinospora cordifolia) is a commonly available plant in many areas. Take a one-foot long branch of giloi, add five to six leaves of Tulsi and boil in water for 15-20 minutes or long enough to allow the water to extract its properties. Add black pepper and sendha (salt used during religious fasts), rock or black salt, or Misri (crystalised sugar like lumps to make it sweet) according to taste. Let it cool a bit and drink this kadha (concoction) while still warm. It will work wonders for your immunity. If giloi plant is not available, get processed giloi powder from Hamdard or others, and concoct a similar drink once a day.
3. A small piece of camphor (kapoor) approximately the size of a tablet should be taken once or twice a month. It can be swallowed with water by adults while children can take it along with mashed potatoes or banana because they will find it difficult to have it without any aides. Please remember camphor is not to be taken everyday, but only once each season, or once a month.
4. Those who can take garlic, must have two pods of raw garlic first thing in the morning. To be swallowed daily with lukewarm water. Garlic too strengthens immunity like the earlier measures mentioned.
5. Those not allergic to milk, must take a glass of hot or lukewarm milk every night with a small measure of haldi (turmeric).
6. Aloe vera (gwarpatha) too is a commonly available plant. Its thick and long, cactus-like leaves have an odourless gel. A teaspoon gel taken with water daily can work wonders for not only your skin and joint pains, but also boost immunity.
7. Take homeopathic medicines — Pyrogenium 200 and Inflenzium 200 in particular — five tablets three times a day, or two-three drops three times a day. While these are not specifically targeted at H1N1 either, these work well as preventive against common flu virus.
8. Do Pranayam daily (preferably under guidance if you are already not initiated into it) and go for morning jog/walk regularly to keep your throat and lungs in good condition and body in fine fettle. Even in small measures, it will work wonders for your body’s resistance against all such diseases which attack the nose, throat and lungs, besides keeping you fit.
9. Have citrus fruits, particularly Vitamin C rich Amla (Indian gooseberry) juice. Since fresh Amla is not yet available in the market (not for another three to four months), it is not a bad idea to buy packaged Amla juice which is commonly available nowadays.
10. Last but not the least, wash your hands frequently every day with soap and warm water for 15-20 seconds; especially before meals, or each time after touching a surface that you suspect could be contaminated with flu virus such as a door handle or a knob/handle, especially if you have returned from a public place or used public transport. Alcohol-based hand cleaners should be kept handy at all times and used until you can get soap and warm water.

I do not want an apology, says Shah Rukh

MUMBAI: An apologetic US administration on Sunday asked actor Shah Rukh Khan if he would accept a "sorry" for his two-hour detention at Newark airport. Shah Rukh is unrelenting. "I don’t want an apology. I just want to go back to my country," he told.
Within hours of his detention after his name flashed on the immigration officer's computer screen for a check, US authorities made a turn-around, saying the superstar was not detained because of his surname but his missing baggage. Shah Rukh said, "There were 20 other people in the same (detention) room. Was even their baggage missing? I was clearly told that my name flashed on their computer and therefore they had to question me."
He agreed that procedure had to be followed, "but the system is a very unfortunate one". "When you have issued me a visa and imprints of my fingers and my photograph are on it, I am sure it is there in your system. Why do I have go through the ordeal?"
The actor, who was never allowed to take his personal bodyguard to the US with him for lack of a work permit, often finds it difficult to move around in public places. "I have a problem with my shoulder (he had a surgery on his shoulder) and if my bodyguard is around he becomes a great help. Unfortunately he does not get a visa. I could easily take him there on a tourist visa, but I don't believe in breaking the rules."
Shah Rukh said he had been uncomfortable going to America after facing "problems" in the past. "Post-9/11, one could understand and one did not complain. But this time it was a bit too much. I have travelled to other countries. I never faced any problem in the UK where I am treated like a state guest. They escort me to the car."

Tulsi can help keep swine flu away: Ayurvedic experts

Tulsi can help keep swine flu away: Ayurvedic experts Lucknow, May 27: Wonder herb Tulsi can not only keep the dreaded swine flu at bay but also help in fast recovery of an afflicted person, Ayurvedic practitioners claim.
"The anti-flu property of Tulsi has been discovered by medical experts across the world quite recently. Tulsi improves the body's overall defence mechanism including its ability to fight viral diseases. It was successfully used in combating Japanese Encephalitis and the same theory applies to swine flu," Dr U K Tiwari, a herbal medicine practitioner says.
Apart from acting as a preventive medicine in case of swine flu, Tulsi can help the patient recover faster.
"Even when a person has already contracted swine flu, Tulsi can help in speeding up the recovery process and also help in strengthening the immune system of the body," he claims.
Dr Bhupesh Patel, a lecturer at Gujarat Ayurved University, Jamnagar is also of the view that Tulsi can play an important role in controlling swine flu.
"Tulsi can control swine flu and it should be taken in fresh form. Juice or paste of at least 20-25 medium sized leaves should be consumed twice a day on an empty stomach."
This increases the resistance of the body and, thereby, reduces the chances of inviting swine flu," believes Patel.

Michael Jackson finally laid to rest

LONDON: 'King of Pop' Michael Jackson has finally been laid to rest without any grand ceremony. The 'Thriller' hitmaker, who died at the age of 50 on June 25, was buried at the Forest Lawn Cemetery in Hollywood Hills without a fan in sight, Mirror online reported. Jackson's family has gone to extraordinary lengths to keep the exact location secret as they are reportedly worried that his followers will throng the resting place of their idol.
They are even considering moving Jackson's body if security becomes an issue, the newspaper said. "Michael has already been laid to rest, but other than the Jackson family and the management at Forest Lawn, no one knows the exact spot," a cemetery source said. "Staff at the cemetery have been fed several different locations, it's as if they are hoping to confuse everyone so it can't leak out. The fear is that thousands of Jackson fans will descend on the cemetery and create a security issue or maybe even damage or deface the grave," the source added.
The pop icon was laid to rest without a service because his family were satisfied with the ceremony that took place before his Los Angeles memorial concert. Earlier last week, Jackson's brain, which was taken out for some clinical tests, was reunited with his body.

Tsunami alert after huge quake off India

NEW DELHI: A huge 7.6 magnitude earthquake struck off the Andaman Islands between India and Myanmar on Tuesday, triggering a tsunami alert across the Indian Ocean, the US Geological Survey reported.
The quake hit around 263 kilometres (163 miles) north of Port Blair, the main town in the Andamans, and was around 33 kilometres (20.2 miles) deep, said a USGS statement. The epicenter was also around 364 kilometres (226 miles) southwest of the Irriwaddy Delta region of Myanmar which was devastated by a huge cyclone in May last year that left over 138,000 people dead. The USGS said a tsunami watch had been issued for India, Myanmar, Indonesia, Thailand and Bangladesh. India's Andaman Islands were hit by the 2004 Asian tsunami which was triggered by an earthquake off the Indonesian island of Sumatra and sent giant waves crashing into countries around the Indian Ocean.
The 2004 tsunami killed more than 220,000 people, most of them in the northern Indonesian province of Aceh. Thousands of people were also killed in Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Thailand and India. There was no immediate response from the authorities in India or Myanmar to the latest quake and tsunami alert. The quake appeared to be only around 100 kilometres (62 miles) north of the main land mass of the Andaman Islands. The Andaman and Nicobar Islands are some of India' most eastern pieces of territory. Over 350,000 people live in the territory flanked by the Andaman Sea and the Bay of Bengal, and it comprises some 572 islands. The Andaman Sea area witnesses frequent earthquakes caused by the meeting of the Indian plate with the Burmese microplate along an area known as the Andaman trench.

No cellphones in schools, says CBSE

AHMEDABAD: Youngsters may be inseparable from their mobile phones, but students and teachers of Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) schools will have to learn to live without the omnipresent handset for as long as they are on campus. CBSE has issued a circular banning mobile phones in schools on July 29. School authorities in Ahmedabad started receiving a copy on Saturday. The circular states mobile phones are a major distraction and, at times, even misused. It specifically mentions mobile phones with cameras. "The cameras, which are a common feature now in most mobile phones, can also be misused.
There have been enough lessons learnt in the past regarding the use of mobile phones and the Board strongly recommends that students should be convinced about not carrying mobile phones to the school," the circular states. There is however no penalty if a student or teacher is caught with one on campus. As the board aims to create meaningful learning atmosphere in the classroom with this initiative even the principal, teachers and other staff too has been debarred from using mobile phones on school premises.
CBSE helpline member and Calorx Public School principal said, "Mobile phones in school have more drawbacks than advantages. Even if mobiles are in silent mode students can make use for SMS during class." Delhi Public School principal Sunil Trivedi added, "We had banned mobiles long ago, but we will ensure even more stringent adherence with this circular. We even have emergency helplines for students in our admin office." Riya Bhaskaran , a class X student from Maharaja Agrasen Vidyalaya, says, " Mobiles has turned into a status symbol and students without cell phone are often looked down upon. I welcome this decision as it would usher in discipline in classroom." While Priya Raghuram, a class X student of DPS (Bopal) however feels a cell phone is a blessing during an emergency. Aditi Gogia, a parent of class VIII student said, "It's an excellent decision as mobiles can never be part of student life. "Both students and teachers will not be allowed to keep the phones while on campus.

Homeopathy can cure swine flu, claims practitioner

MUMBAI: At a time the country is grappling with H1N1 virus and Tamiflu tablet is belived to be the only solution, a well-known medical practitioner today claimed that people can have a cost-effective treatment in homeopathy for swine flu. "The people can take some of cost-effective and clinically proved homeopathic medicines for swine flu treatment as well as prevention," Batra's Positive Clinic's chairman and managing director, Dr Mukesh Batra, said. Batra recommends `Oscilococcinium 30' and `Influenzium 200' for swine flu prevention as well as to improve the immune system among the general public towards the flu.
"The homeopathy medicine 'Gelsemium 30' has been proved effective clinically in the treatment of swine flu in France a decade back and has been reported in the British journal of Clinical Medicine," Batra said. Similarly, treatment for swine-flu was done in Spain during 1917-18 war period with 'Bryonia 30' and proved effective, he said. In the case of Spanish flu, homeopathy brought mortality rate from 30 per cent to one per cent, he claimed.

11 injured as local skips signal, hits another in Mahim

MUMBAI: Eleven people were injured when an Andheri-bound train rammed into a stationary Borivli-bound slow local at platform no 1 at Mahim station on Sunday afternoon. The accident apparently occurred as the Andheri-bound train failed to stop at a signal before Mahim, but Western Railway (WR) said it would conduct an inquiry to ascertain the cause of the incident. Suburban services were delayed for half an hour and slow trains were diverted to the fast corridor. The mega block between Mahim and Santacruz on Sunday only made things worse for commuters. The driver and guard of the Andheri-bound train. The two have been suspended for a week and further action may be taken against them based on the inquiry report, said WR chief PRO S S Gupta.
When the accident occurred people heard a loud noise that sounded like a blast. Many passengers on the train too initially thought there was an explosion, and some jumped off the trains and ran out to the street. Police cordoned off the area. Help arrived from the Mahim and Shivaji Park police, while railway staff were rushing to help the injured. Nine passengers were given first aid at Sion hospital and later discharged. The injured are Hitesh Ranchandani (24), Rajesh Kumar Bind (22), Avinash Dutto (24), Nema Rane (21), Usha Ramesh Talsoniya (36), Sushila Kunchikorbe (40), Dattatreya Kale (68), Nilesh Kawle (30) and Asha Jayanti Ugarniya (27). The Railways paid Rs 500 to each of the injured and they were sent home. The driver of the Andheri train and the guard of the Borivli local were also injured. The Borivli local had halted at platform number one when the Andheri-bound train ran into its southern end. The Borivli-bound train was scheduled to arrive at Mahim station at 1.07 pm, but got there three minutes late, at the scheduled arrival time of the Andheri-bound train, leading to the collision, said WR additional general manager R S Chugh. Mumbai Central GRP senior inspector Bharatkumar Rane said the driver of the Andheri-bound local jumped a signal near Mahim and collided with the Borivli train. Chugh concurred that the Andheri train had proceeded without getting the signal to do so. A high-level inquiry has been ordered to ascertain whether the failure was technical or manual, said WR public relations officer Nitin David. Andheri train driver S Kolhe said he had applied the brakes, but was unable to explain how the mishap took place. Train guard B Singh too said he did not know what had gone wrong. “I was in the fourth car of the Borivali train when the incident occurred. My first reaction was alarm at the thought of a possible bomb blast and at the sight of people running down the platform,’’ commuter Ashok Kamble told on Sunday. Another commuter, Andheri resident Santosh Chavan, said, “It’s unbelievable that the driver did not notice the stop signal just 100 metres from Mahim station.’’

Australia assures safety of Indian students

NEW DELHI: Australia on Thursday assured India that "firm action" will be taken against those responsible for attacks on Indian students and stressed that inputs from the Indian community will be factored in a safety plan for international students.
External Affairs Minister S.M. Krishna, the first cabinet level Indian minister to visit Australia since the recent spike in attacks on Indian students, met New South Wales Premier Nathan Rees and discussed violence and difficulties faced by Indian students. Rees assured India that "firm action" will be taken against those responsible for the recent wave of attacks on Indian students that had created outrage in India and the diaspora community. Rees also assured Krishna that inputs from the Indian community will be included in the action plan for international students. He informed the minister that a meeting of the task force on the issue was to be held Friday. Besides meeting representatives of the department of education, the Foreign Office and the law enforcement authorities, Krishna interacted with Indian students and the Indian community. The discussions focused on monitoring the role of travel agents and mechanisms to monitor private colleges in Australia, official sources said in Delhi. The Indian consulate has started a weekly interaction with Indian students to discuss their problems and safety issues, the sources said. After the meeting, Krishna said that he was satisfied with the steps taken by Australian authorities to ensure the safety of the students. Indians are "by and large most welcome in Australia", Krishna observed, according to the ABC Online. Krishna, who is on a five-day visit to Down Under, said he did not believe that Australia was a racist nation, adding that he was satisfied with the reassurance he received and will return to India with the premier's message. "Indian students are going to be safe in Australia," he said. At least 19 Indian students have been brutally attacked in Melbourne and Sydney, with the first attack in the recent spurt taking place May 9. Nearly 100,000 Indian students are studying in Australia, contributing around $2 billion annually to the host country. Besides the attacks, an education and migration scam has been exposed and a college, where many students are Indian, has shut down, putting a question mark on their future. Krishna will meet his Australian counterpart Stephen Smith and call on Prime Minister Kevin Rudd to discuss a range of issues, including the attacks on Indian students that has put the growing bilateral relationship under strain. Besides Sydney, he will also go to Melbourne to hear first-hand about the problems faced by Indian students and will discuss their safety and security with the state leadership. He will later participate in the Annual Post Forum Dialogue Meeting of the 16-nation Pacific Island Forum (PIF), at which India is a dialogue partner, in Cairns in northeast Australia.

Pakistani Taliban chief Mehsud may be dead: Malik

ISLAMABAD: There is a strong likelihood that Pakistani Taliban chief Baitullah Mehsud was killed along with his wife and bodyguards in a missile attack two days ago, Pakistan's interior minister Rehman Malik said.
"We suspect he was killed in the missile strike," Malik said on Friday. "We have some information, but we don't have material evidence to confirm it." A US official also said there was reason to believe Mehsud was dead. "There is reason to believe that reports of his death may be true, but it can't be confirmed at this time," said the official, providing the information on condition of anonymity. The official would not comment on the circumstances surrounding Mehsud's possible death. The United States has placed a $5 million reward on the head of Mehsud, an ally of al Qaeda widely regarded in Pakistan as Public Enemy No. 1. The attack in a tribal region of northwest Pakistan was believed to have been carried out by a pilotless US drone aircraft at around 1:00 am on Wednesday. Neither the Pakistani nor US governments confirm such attacks because of sensitivities over violation of Pakistan's territorial sovereignty. Intelligence officials and relatives had confirmed earlier that Mehsud's second wife had been killed in the missile strike that targeted her father's home in an outlying settlement close to Makeen village in the South Waziristan tribal region. A relative of Mehsud's dead wife had initially said the Taliban leader wasn't present when the missiles struck, but rumours that he had either been wounded or killed refused to die down.
The stricken house is some two hours' walk from Makeen, and Taliban fighters had cordoned off the area, refusing to let people enter, according to villagers. A senior Pakistani security official said that aside from Mehsud's wife, one of Mehsud's brothers and seven of his bodyguards perished in the attack. The official said intelligence services were trying to discover the identity of another victim, and there was a good chance it was Mehsud. Intelligence agents had also picked up signs that leaders of various Taliban factions planned to gather for a shura, or council meeting, somewhere in Waziristan later on Friday. Sometimes in the past, militant leaders presumed to have been killed have resurfaced later. Mehsud declared himself leader of the Pakistan Taliban, grouping around 13 factions in the northwest, in late 2007, and his fighters have been behind a wave of suicide attacks inside Pakistan and on Western forces across the border in Afghanistan. He is accused of being behind the assassination of Benazir Bhutto in December 2007, a charge he has denied. Conspiracy theories abound over who killed the former prime minister. US missile attacks on Mehsud territory in South Waziristan became more frequent after the Pakistan government ordered a military offensive against him in June. Pakistan forces have also bombarded Mehsud's stronghold with air raids and artillery. Mehsud is estimated to have between 10,000 and over 20,000 battle-hardened fighters with him in the mountains. The army has sealed roads around Mehsud's territory and villagers have fled the area, but as the days have dragged on there was growing speculation that the strategy might be to isolate him by stealth rather than launch a full-blown assault.

Two Hizbul militants arrested in Delhi

NEW DELHI: Two suspected Hizbul Mujahideen militants, allegedly planning terror strikes ahead of Independence Day, were arrested tonight, Delhi police said.
Javed Ahmed and Ashiq Ali were apprehended by Delhi Police' special cell from central Delhi's Daryaganj area when they were travelling in a white Santro car. "We caught them from Mahavir parking area," Joint Commissioner of Police (Special Cell) P N Agarwal said.
The arrest came nine days ahead of the Independence Day celebrations in the national capital. "We had intelligence inputs about the movement of these militants and we tracked them," the officer said. The arrest came hours after Union Home Ministry made public intelligence inputs about LeT planning terror attack in three cities -- Delhi, Hyderabad and Kolkata -- ahead of August 15.
The official said two AK-47 rifles, about 100 catridges and two grenades were also recovered from the militants, who were in their early 30s.
Asked about their nationality, the official said they appeared to be Indians. Following intelligence inputs about terror strikes, the Delhi Police has deployed hundreds of policemen and paramilitary personnel across the city.
Security agencies are constantly reviewing arrangements at the Red Fort, where Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will unfurl the tricolour. Specialised units like Quick Reaction Teams, Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) and Vajra (of the Rapid Action force) are being deployed, an official said.

How Microsoft is cutting costs

These are tough times. And, tough times call for tough measures. The software giant Microsoft too is following certain tough measures to rein in costs. According to company's Chief Financial Officer Chris Liddell, Microsoft is going in for a new diet regime where you slim down and stay slim. He added, “It's actually about dialing up the importance of costs.” Coping with its first annual sales drop, the company plans to make frugality a new way of life. Microsoft, which slashed $3 billion in operating expenses, expects software industry sales to expand 5 percent to 10 percent annually after the recession ends. That compares with Microsoft’s 18 percent sales growth in 2008. To tide over the slow growth, the software king has devised various ways to bring down the costs. Here's a look.
In its first bid to control cost, the company has adopted stringent policy on travel. Across the company, Microsoft managers have cancelled conferences and reserved business trips for visiting customers instead of employee meetings. The company has also put more limits on business-class flights. Microsoft is said to have saved as much as $200 million on travel in each of the past two quarters. CFO Liddell also wants employees to fight much harder for customers and ensure products are released on time with all the promised features. “It was a huge wake-up call for people that this was not a fire drill, this was something serious,” he said.
This January, Microsoft Corp made its first-ever mass layoffs in its 34-year history. The company announced approximately 5,000 job cuts. Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer had then said that the company cut operating expenses by $600 million in the quarter earlier (Q2), but that it wasn't enough. The job cuts are expected to reduce operating costs by $1.5 billion as Microsoft prepares for lower revenue and earnings in the second half of the year. Bitten by low consumer spending, Ballmer added, "We're certainly in the midst of a once-in-a-lifetime set of economic conditions." The layoffs affected workers in research and development, marketing, sales, finance, legal and corporate affairs, human resources and information technology teams. Most of these employees were based in the company's offices' in Redmond and Washington. In May, the software giant announced 55 layoffs in India, which is about one per cent of its Indian staff. The announcement was part of the Redmond-based company's decision in January to cut 5,000 jobs globally.
Microsoft is also doing away with many of its products and services. These products and services are the ones which aren't succeeding or didn't fit into the company's strategy. The company recently jettisoned products such as YouTube competitor Soapbox and the Flight Simulator video game. “I’m seeing them discontinue products, which is something they’ve never done before,” said Walter Price, managing director at RCM Capital Management in San Francisco. “It sends a signal that the company is serious.” Price, who manages about $2.3 billion, had sold all his Microsoft shares last summer. He said he was impressed enough with the cost reductions in the past few months that Microsoft is now one of his fund’s top holdings.
